Felipe Godinez was awarded 3rd place in the Student Paper competition at the recent IEEE Medical Imaging Conference in Anaheim, CA, for his work entitled: “pawPET: a High Sensitivity, High Resolution PET Scanner for Rodent Paws.” Felipe built a PET scanner with a spatial resolution close to 0.6 mm. Dr Ramsey Badawi has been awarded the prestigious “Provocative Questions” grant by the National Institutes of Health to develop a PET scanner that pushes the limits of disease detection by being over 50 times more sensitive than current systems. Andrea Ferrero has been awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Student Fellowship to work on breast imaging at the interface between radiology, pathology and engineering. This is a prestigeous and highly competitive graduate student award. Well done Andri!

Dr Abhijit Chaudhari has just been awarded a grant by the California Breast Cancer Research Program to build a high-resolution detector insert for a prototype breast PET scanner (pictured left) currently being built in the Badawi Lab. The aim is to develop a device that will be able to image a small region of the breast at a resolution better than 1 mm.

Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari wins two prizes
The Nuclear Medical and Imaging Sciences Council ( NMISC ) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers awarded Chaudhari the 2011 Bruce H. Hasegawa Young Investigator Medical Imaging Science Award. Dr. Chaudhari received the award at the 2011 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference in Valencia, Spain, on Oct. 26. The IEEE gives the Hasegawa Award annually to a young individual in recognition of significant and innovative contributions to the field of medical imaging science. Judges evaluate nominees based on the technical merit of their contributions and the creativity of their research. The award consists of $1,500, a certificate and a plaque.
The American College of Rheumatology selected an image from Dr. Chaudhari as the winner in the Still Image Category of the college’s 2011 Annual Image Competition. Dr. Chaudhari received the award at the college’s annual meeting in Chicago. The winning image is from a research project on which Dr. Chaudhari is the principal investigator, “PET-CT Imaging of the Finger Joints in Psoriatic Arthritis.” The image will be featured in an upcoming issue of the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism, and can be seen here:
